Hummingbird Platform Nesterfrom the Wood Wizard Gallery, on the Siuslaw River in Florence, Oregon.The number one threat to Hummingbirds in the USA is WIND! We build wind-protected designs with nests in the back. Wings are attached to cedar decks. (Cedar keeps out mites.) Lichen is one of the main ingredients in Hummingbird nests when they can find it. We put a lot of it on a nest so more than one Hummingbird can harvest from it. Seventy percent of the time Hummingbirds will nest in the natural “Y” of a tree branch. We have added a Y-shaped branch to the nesting platform. Most people are not aware that Hummingbirds eat bugs. They are bug-eating machines! In the nesting area, we attach fir and pine cones where bugs can hatch, giving the chicks more nutrition at an earlier age. Hummingbirds usually nest twice a year in late march and late June and have a lifespan of about five years. THIS PART IS IMPORTANT! We have domesticated the female Hummingbird! She’s only going to nest near a feeder because she has to eat every 10 minutes. You need to provide a minimum of 3 feeders. If you only put out 1 or 2, the male is usually so aggressive he will chase her and other Hummingbirds away. Place feeders 3 to 4 feet apart. If you spread them too far apart, you may attract more than one aggressive male. Hang your Hummingbird Nester close to the feeders from the first of March to the end of March. Then move it to a low-wind area of your house. The females will usually follow the nest if is stays near the food sources. VERY IMPORTANT! : When Spring temperatures stay at 60 degrees or more for at least two days, you must clean and fill the feeders thoroughly in preparation for returning hummingbirds. The nest opening is about the size of a quarter. Completely safe for Hummingbirds. |
